We’ve got some significant news coming out of Punjab that’s going to change how vehicle registration and number plates work. The Punjab government has made a major decision to link number plates directly to the owner, not just the vehicle itself.
This is a pretty big shift, and it’s aimed at improving security and bringing more transparency to vehicle ownership. Let’s break down what this new system means for you.
What’s Changing?
Currently, when a vehicle is registered, the number plate is issued for that specific vehicle. Under the new system, number plates will be issued directly in the name of the owner. This means all registered cars and motorcycles across Punjab will have their number plates tied directly to the person who owns them.
How Will This Work?
This is where it gets interesting! If you sell your car or motorcycle, you’ll need to remove the existing number plate and keep it with you. The new buyer will then have a few options:
- They can obtain a brand new number plate for their newly acquired vehicle.
- If they already own a number plate that’s registered in their name, they can affix that existing number plate to their new vehicle.
The new system will also introduce categories for number plates. This means specific numbers can be displayed on motorcycles and cars based on these categories.
If you’re thinking of putting your old, cherished number plate on a new vehicle, be aware that there will be an additional fee. This fee will range from PKR 500 to PKR 8,000, depending on the category of the vehicle (car or motorcycle) and the type of number.
When Will This New System Start?
The Excise and Taxation officials have already sent a summary to the Punjab government, outlining the necessary amendments to the relevant laws and new rules for this system. It’s expected that this new system will be officially implemented by the first week of next month. So, get ready for these changes very soon!
According to Excise officials, the primary reason behind this move is security. By linking number plates directly to owners, it will be much easier to clearly and securely identify the owner of any vehicle.
This initiative is expected to bring several benefits:
- Increased transparency in the buying and selling of vehicles.
- It will become much easier to trace a vehicle used in any illegal activity, as the owner’s identity will be readily available.
This is a significant step towards modernizing vehicle registration in Punjab and enhancing overall security. What do you think about these new changes? Let us know in the comments below!
