Punjab Govt Has Not Cancelled Electric Bike Scheme
Negating the circulating news on different media outlets the Punjab government has stated that the much-anticipated electric bike scheme is not cancelled. According to the provincial government official, this is is false information and the the government is very much in the scheme. “The application process has been completed,” he stated, adding that e-balloting will be held in the coming week.
As per official data, total of 15,210 applications for e-bikes have been received by the Punjab government till May 1, 2024, which was the closing date for the application. “The verification is in the process,” the official concluded.
False Reports
Earlier reports suggested that the government has significantly changed its plans for promoting eco-friendly transportation. Initially, The media reports claimed that the provincial government has ended the plan citing the reasons of battery theft and low mileage. As an alternative offer, the govt will distribute the conventional petrol-powered motorcycles on easy and interest-free installments, the reports claimed.
Bike Scheme for Students
Last month, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif started a program for university students too. The government offered 20,000 bikes, both electric and petrol ones.
Total Bikes: The government plans to distribute 20,000 bikes, 1,000 of which will be electric bikes and 19,000 petrol bikes. And guess what? Students won’t have to worry about paying any interest on their monthly installments.
Installment Plan: To make bike distribution easier for students, the Punjab government has teamed up with the Bank of Punjab (BOP). The monthly installment for electric bikes is Rs. 10,000, while for petrol bikes, it’s Rs. 5,000.
Delivery: Transparency is key, so the government has decided to hold a draw in May to ensure fairness in the distribution process.
Quota: To ensure equal opportunity, quotas have been set. In urban areas, the bikes will be evenly split between male and female students. However, in rural areas, there’s a bit of difference with 70% of the quota reserved for male students and 30% for female students.
