Punjab Introduces Easier Access to Driving Licenses
Punjab has launched a new initiative to streamline the process of obtaining a driving license, making it quicker and more convenient. Mobile facilities are now reaching citizens directly at their doorsteps.
The move, launched under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, introduces mobile police stations and specially designed license vans. Authorities say the plan is meant to remove hurdles for applicants and extend services to locations where people may find it difficult to access traditional traffic offices.
Mobile Vans for Wider Access
According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic, Mohammad Waqas Nazir, the vans will operate across all districts of the province. He added that the vehicles would also visit women’s colleges and universities to make the service more accessible to female applicants.
Currently, 33 vans are operational, with authorities aiming to expand the fleet to 118 in the near future. Among them, seven pink-colored vans have been designated exclusively for women, a step officials say will ensure comfort and ease of recognition.
Digital Licensing Reform
The new system builds on reforms introduced earlier this year. In April, the Punjab Police launched an electronic licensing service, enabling drivers to carry their permits digitally and simplifying verification for traffic authorities.
The digital platform also enables drivers to apply for and renew their licenses via their mobile phones, a measure aimed at curbing unlicensed driving.
Together, the mobile vans and e-license system represent a broader effort to modernize public services in Punjab, bringing them closer to citizens while enhancing enforcement and road safety.
