The Punjab government has officially announced that Lahore will soon have a tram service, which is expected to become operational in February 2026.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar confirmed that the decision follows a successful trial run. The first phase of the project will connect Thokar to Harbanspura, providing a new commuting option for city residents.

Passengers Capacity and Project Cost

Each tram is designed to carry up to 270 passengers, making it a significant addition to Lahore’s public transport network. The initiative, costing around $3 million, is being developed in collaboration with experts from Punjab NESPAK and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority, who recently visited China for consultations on the project.

In addition to Lahore’s tram, the government is also planning new metro train systems in Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The Faisalabad metro is projected to serve 300,000 passengers daily with an investment of $110 million, while the Gujranwala project aims to accommodate 140,000 daily riders at an estimated cost of $50 million.

Minister Akbar said that these projects are part of Punjab’s strategy to reduce air pollution caused by motorcycles and other vehicles, improving both urban mobility and environmental conditions.
