Punjab to Roll Out AI-Based Driving Test Cars Next Year

Lahore – Punjab Traffic Police has introduced Pakistan’s first artificial intelligence (AI)–based driving test car, which will be used to automate driving license tests.

Prototype and Future Plans

DIG Punjab, Waqas, in an interview with City42 shared on the department’s social media account, showed the prototype car. He added that the Chief Minister will formally launch the project in the next fiscal year. Once rolled out, 200 AI-based vehicles will be deployed across Punjab to conduct automated driving tests.

How the System Works

The new system begins with biometric verification. A candidate will confirm their identity inside the car using a fingerprint sensor located on the right side of the steering column, ensuring that only the genuine applicant attempts the test.

After biometric authentication, instructions for the test are then displayed on a built-in screen. The car will be fitted with hi-tech sensors, a facial recognition camera, and software that records every step of the test.

There will be cameras on the exterior of the car that track every movement of the driver, including cone hits, wrong turns, or missed signals.

After completion, the AI system independently evaluates performance and determines whether the candidate has passed or failed, thereby eliminating the need for human examiners. Moreover, the spokesperson also stated that test results will be uploaded instantly to a secure database, thereby reducing the likelihood of error or manipulation.

Addressing Corruption Concerns

Waqas stated that the new technology is expected to “remove corruption from the driving test system completely.”

By automating the process, officials believe the chances of unfair practices and human bias will be significantly reduced.
