Jaecoo J6 – A Game-Changing EV SUV?

0 1,921

The electric vehicle revolution continues to gain momentum in Pakistan, with the latest contender to shake up the market being the Jaecoo J6. Recently unveiled by Nishat Group, this all-electric SUV is the first model from Chery’s sub-brand Jaecoo to hit local roads — and it’s nothing short of impressive.

In PakWheels’ first look review, we’ll take a deep dive into the design, features, and tech that make this EV a potential game-changer in its class. But beyond just features, the J6 brings a new design language, premium tech, and electric practicality that make it stand out in an increasingly crowded SUV market.

Exterior Walkaround

At first glance, the Jaecoo J6 draws obvious inspiration from Land Rover and Toyota FJ Cruiser — with a boxy silhouette, straight-cut lines, and an upright stance. But this isn’t just a copy-paste job. The design has its own identity — one that feels futuristic, clean, and confident.

The front fascia is aggressive, featuring matrix LED headlamps, sharp DRLs, and a glowing Jaecoo emblem. The 19-inch alloy wheels (with machine finish and piano black elements) add a premium touch, while concealed door handles and sleek roof rails maintain the futuristic appeal.

From the side, plastic cladding runs from the doors to the rear, emphasizing its SUV character. With a ground clearance of 195 mm, it’s well-suited for Pakistani roads and light off-roading alike.

The rear design is perhaps the most unique — featuring lava-style LED tail lamps, a side-hinged tailgate (Jeep-style), and a spare-tire-like utility box for the EV charging kit. It’s a bold choice, and one that adds rugged appeal.

Interior Overview

The cabin is also boxy in design. The infotainment system is a 15.6-inch screen, through which nearly every function of the car is controlled. There are barely any physical buttons, even for basics like the glovebox or door lock. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available wirelessly.

There’s a 360° camera system with both 2D and 3D views, and a front DVR for recording. The 9.2-inch instrument cluster remains visible regardless of how the steering is adjusted. The dashboard and doors feature premium materials and visible stitching. The car also has 64-color ambient lighting.

Entry is possible using a smart key or NFC card, and the car powers on automatically once unlocked — no start button is needed. The gear lever is placed on the right side of the steering wheel.

  • There’s a wireless charger (50W), USB ports, cupholders, and a panoramic sunroof.

  • Sound system is by Infinity, with 12 speakers.

  • The central armrest opens sideways and has airflow inside (not a cooled box).

Smart & Safety Features

The Jaecoo J6 comes with:

  • 6 airbags

  • ADAS features like:

    • Forward Safety Assist

    • Lane Departure Warning

    • Emergency Lane Keep

    • Blind Spot Monitor

    • Adaptive Cruise Control

    • Driver Attention Warning

There is no physical headlight switch — it’s either auto or manually tapped for dipper use.

Driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, Custom) and terrain modes (All Roads, Slippery, Beach, Muddy, Bumpy) are controlled via the screen. The car also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), allowing external devices to be powered using the car’s battery.

Performance Specs

  • Battery: 69.7 kWh (CATL)

  • Horsepower: 279 hp

  • Torque: 385 Nm

  • 0–100 km/h: 6.5 seconds (claimed)

  • Claimed range:

    • 418 km (NEDC)

    • ~350 km (WLTP equivalent)

    • ~310 km (EPA equivalent)

Although some people think 6.5 seconds isn’t that fast on paper, in practice, the car accelerates very quickly. When pushed, it responds sharply, and the front end lifts. The radar system also picks up nearby objects and vehicles like bikes and trucks in real-time and shows them on the screen.

The car’s AWD system switches between two-wheel and all-wheel drive as needed to maintain energy efficiency.

Suspension & Ride

Suneel drives the car on a road filled with potholes and broken surfaces. He finds the suspension response smooth and very good. He estimates the overall size to be close to that of typical C-segment SUVs and confirms that this is a CBU unit imported into Pakistan.

Verdict

The Jaecoo J6 presents a distinctive boxy design with a minimalistic, tech-focused interior. Most functions are controlled through a large central screen, with very few physical buttons. Comfort features extend to both front and rear seats, and usability is supported by intelligent drive modes and terrain settings. Ride quality feels smooth even on rough roads, and the cabin offers decent space. The focus is clearly on modern convenience, smart systems, and everyday practicality rather than traditional styling or mechanical simplicity.
