Punjab Government has reportedly accepted an old demand from Lahore Car Dealers. Talking to a private news channel, Shahzada Saleem, President Lahore Car Dealers Federation, said that a delegation met Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi and presented its request to change the biometric system in Punjab. “We have been asking to implement Islamabad’s Biometric System replacing the current system in Punjab,” Saleem said.
Saleem claimed that the chief minister had ordered the relevant ministry to replace the whole system within seven days.
Punjab & Islamabad Biometric System
According to the federation president, the current biometric system in Punjab has destroyed 35% of car dealers’ business. According to Saleem, the difference in Islamabad Biometric System is that you can get open biometrics under it, while in Punjab, the buyer has to transfer the car to their name, even if he is a car dealer. “We have to transfer the car to our name after buying, and then it would be transferred to the new buyer; resultingly, harming the showroom business,” Saleem claimed.
“Under the Islamabad Biometric System, the car will remain parked at our showrooms under Open Letter and will be transferred to the new owner after finalization of the sale deal,” the car dealer mentioned.
So, the main difference between Islamabad and Punjab Biometric System is:
- Under Islamabad System, dealers can sell the car with an open letter
- In Punjab, they must transfer the vehicle to their name before selling it forward.
Critical Issue in Both Systems
Most car experts believe the Punjab Biometric System is better than Islamabad’s because it ensures more transparency. However, both systems have one critical loophole: the physical presence of both seller and buyer. This raises the question, why is the physical presence important when the whole system is digitalized? It should be done online because it is smooth and easy for both parties.
Disclaimer: The change in Punjab Biometric System is claimed by the dealers’ federation president, but there is no official announcement yet. So, as a consumer, we have to wait for an official announcement/notification for confirmation.

And open the door for corruption, tax evasive, smuggling and other illegal use of vehicles by short term rentals to smugglers who like to use a different vehicle every time for running drugs and weapons. It is indeed a welcome news for dealers and smugglers.
The huge feeling of relief for legitimate buyers that their car is clean is now clouded in doubt.
If at some time in future such car is identified by LEA’S as wanted for some crime, both owners and vehicles will end up in custody.
Good luck fighting for bail and proving your innocence.
