If you are driving your vehicle on an open transfer letter, beware! The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has posted a deadline of 20 days to register such vehicles in the owner’s name. The E&T Department will cancel the vehicle transfer on open letters after the said deadline.

According to the department, vehicle owners can get their vehicles transferred to their name with the existing method till the 30th of June. Starting from the 1st of July, both buyer and seller of the vehicle will have to visit the Excise office for biometric vehicle transfer.  Here’s the official notice.

Vehicle Transfer Notice

The Punjab Excise and Taxation department made the biometric verification mandatory for vehicle ownership transfer in March 2020. Citizens are still doing the irresponsible act of driving the vehicle on open transfer letters, which is illegal.

When someone buys a used vehicle and does not get it transferred to their name, the vehicle stays registered in the name of the ex-owner, so all challans are issued in his name. Similarly, if the vehicle is used in any criminal activity, the authorities will take action against the ex-owner. As per the official notice, the Government of Punjab has taken this step to mitigate delays in transferring vehicle ownership and take care of the consequent security matters and frauds.

If you have been delaying the transfer of vehicle, do it before the 30th of June by following the existing procedure. Otherwise, you’ll have to go through the trouble of biometric verification.

For more information about the ownership of a vehicle, call 0800-08786, send an SMS to 8785, or visit the official website of the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department.
