The issue of one-way violations was getting out of hand, and the growing frequency of these violations prompted the police to issue this warning. The crackdown for these violators will start from 17th January 2020. A total of 100 different spots in Karachi have been identified and will be monitored meticulously by police personnel to catch violators. These spots have been identified as the ones where most violations of one-way rule occur. These violations have resulted in deaths and tragic accidents over the years. The traffic police will be particularly vigilant between 3 pm to 6 pm. Traffic police will be assisted by the local police stations to arrest and charge violators.
Motorists traveling on the wrong side will be immediately arrested, and cases will be filed under section 279 of the law. In 2019, a total of more than 3.1 million people were issued challans over various traffic rules violations. Following traffic rules is imperative to save yourself and others from getting into an accident. Hefty fines and warning of arrests are deterrents to those who fail to obey the traffic rules. In order to ensure the safety and security of everyone traveling on the roads, this policy will surely be effective in the long run. DIGs, SHOs, and SPs have been given clear directives to follow the new rule. The officials have been directed to charge and arrest people without any sort of discrimination. Violators will be taken to court the next day of their arrest.
Last year, the federal cabinet approved a massive hike in fines on the highways to prevent overspending and other violations of the traffic rules. After protests and shutdowns from the transportation sector, the government put the hikes in fines on hold. The government is still mulling over the hike in fines with major stakeholders, especially the transportation sector. Before the approval for new fines, violators were being charged PKR 750 across the board for every violation on the highways.
