Yamaha Unveils Its First Hybrid Bike
Like cars, motorcycle manufacturers also try to make their products efficient in terms of comfort, tech, fuel costs, aerodynamics and mechanics. However, with the global auto industry making strides in sustainable development, hybrid technology is also a focus point to meet the emission standards.
Producing a hybrid car is a common thing but after cars, introducing a hybrid drivetrain in motorcycles is also becoming a new norm. Yamaha has launched its hybrid motorcycle, the FZ-S Fi Hybrid in India at the ex-showroom price of Rs. 1,44,800.
Yamaha FZ-S Fi – The Outlook
The FZ-S Fi Hybrid maintains its bold, muscular appearance at first glance, though subtle design tweaks are evident. The fuel tank cover features sharper edges, while the front turn signals have been seamlessly integrated into the air intake section, lending a sleeker aesthetic.
A standout upgrade is the inclusion of a 4.2-inch color TFT display, offering smart connectivity features like call and notification alerts, as well as music playback controls. The switchgear has been redesigned and repositioned for enhanced usability, complemented by an adjusted handlebar position and a relocated horn switch for better accessibility. Adding a modern touch, the fuel tank now boasts an airplane-style fuel cap.
Engine & Performance
It comes with 149 cc, single-cylinder engine delivering 12.4 hp and 13.3 Nm of torque, though it’s unclear if these figures have been tweaked slightly. The standout feature is the introduction of Yamaha’s Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), a first for their motorcycles in India, previously seen in the RayZR and Fascino hybrid scooters.
This system, paired with a Smart Motor Generator (SMG), enhances efficiency by charging the battery and delivering a mild torque boost for faster acceleration, especially useful in stop-and-go traffic or overtaking. Additional fuel-saving technologies include a start/stop system and a silent start feature, making the bike both practical and eco-friendly.
The FZ-S FI Hybrid differs from hybrid cars or Kawasaki’s Ninja 7 Hybrid by lacking a large battery or standalone electric motor. Instead, it supports the combustion engine only when necessary. This lightweight commuter benefits from slight efficiency improvements and enhanced low-speed throttle response.
