In a First – AI to Trace Traffic Violations in Punjab

In this era of digitalization, artificial intelligence is considered as the top product of technological advancement. From creating creative content to solving complex problems, AI is still on the way of constant evolution. And interestingly, the Punjab government started using artificial intelligence as a pivotal tool to curb traffic violations making roads safe for the motorists.

In a tweet, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, informed about the update, saying, “For the first ever time in Punjab & Pakistan, we have started tracing traffic violations through AI-based detection.”


Under this AI based detection process, following violations will be traced:

  • Violation of traffic signals
  • Tripple Riding
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road
  • Tinted/Covered glass
  • Violation of line/lane/zebra crossing etc.
  • Plying a motor vehicle where prohibited
  • One wheeling
  • Emitting excessive smoke
  • Riding a motorcycle without helmet
  • Non-fasting of seatbelt
  • Violation of parking rules
  • Exceeding prescribed speed limit
  • Carrying passengers exceeding permissible limit
  • Overloading goods vehicles
  • Driving at night without proper headlights
  • Obstructing traffic
  • Use of mobile phone while driving
  • Driving an unregistered motor vehicle
  • Driving in violation of age limit (underage or juvenile driver)

Earlier, the then Punjab’s interim government and afterwards the incumbent also started the crackdown against the individuals driving without helmets. Ex-Interim government also introduced services like online registration and renewal of driving license.

To facilitate the people, traffic police launched an online service for the people. The groundbreaking decision aims to simplify and streamline the licensing process, considering the surge in the number of people applying for licenses in the region.

Renew Driving License Online

People can renew their licenses through the online system. The candidates can renew their licenses for one, three, five, and ten years. Meanwhile, an international driving license will remain valid for three years.

The masses can download their local and international e-licenses easily, the announcement said, adding that these candidates would no longer have to take physical driving tests.

    No wonder over newbie drivers hardly knowing their way of negotiating through tight spaces.
