The cheap petrol scheme for bikes, rickshaws and cars up to 800cc is the talk of the town nowadays. The government has announced an Rs. 50/liter subsidy for the lower-income segment of society. Yesterday, Minister of State for Petroleum, Musadik Malik, shared the complete process of getting the petrol, and you can read about it here. However, later in the day, an announcement by International Monetary Fund (IMF) caused some uneasiness as the lender body said that Pakistan had not consulted with them before announcing this scheme. Pertinently, Islamabad is currently in talks with the IMF for release of the next installment of the loan.

Cheap Petrol Scheme Delayed?

And today, a news channel reported that the government has decided to delay the scheme. The media reports, quoting finance ministry sources, claimed that the decision was taken after IMF objected. The report also stated that the finance ministry would work further on implementing the scheme; hence, it is being delayed.

This caused further uncertainty; however, Musadik Malik denied this news, stating that IMF cannot object to this scheme as it is not a subsidy.

“The government is increasing petrol price of rich and decreasing for poor,” the minister said. He added that 2.14 crore bikes and small cars would be beneficial for this scheme. “As per our estimated, 461 million liter fuel will be used for bikes and 800cc cars monthly,” he mentioned.

In conclusion, the government hasn’t decided to delay the scheme, meaning it will be implemented after six weeks, as per the earlier plan. Still, six weeks is quite a long period, and there are chances of a change, so keep your fingers crossed, especially if you own a bike or small car, and hope for the best.

Good thing and thanks God. I am not willing to pay for a londa doing wheelie’s on his motorbike. I would rather see him in jail and pay for his patli daal.
