Drone pilot Joe Tegtmeyer recently took to the skies above Giga Texas, capturing intriguing images of a Tesla Cybertruck after what is believed to be its first verified Tesla crash test.

Tesla Crash Test

Airbags Deployed: The front airbags did their job, deploying upon impact.

Windshield Damage: The sharply raked windshield exhibits severe cracks but remains intact, offering insights into the force of the collision.

Door Disarray: The doors, knocked off their hinges, illustrate the intensity of the crash.

Frunk Impact: The frunk, bent severely, suggests a significant absorption of impact energy, indicating effective crumple zone functionality.

New Safety Upgrade

In a testament to Tesla’s commitment to continuous improvement, a new safety feature has been rolled out through an over-the-air software update. As of the latest update:

“If an airbag is deployed, hazard lights will automatically activate & flash faster to improve visibility.”

This enhancement adds an extra layer of safety, ensuring that in the event of a collision, the vehicle becomes more visible to surrounding traffic, reducing the risk of further incidents.

Previous Tests and Teasers

This isn’t the first time Tesla has subjected its Cybertruck to structural evaluations. In September 2023, images of a ditch rollover test circulated on social media. The images revealed a bent roof, deployed airbags, and scattered exterior components.

Tesla had teased an official crash test video showcasing a full frontal impact test. However, the video was promptly taken down before revealing conclusive results.

Larger Safety Picture

While these drone images provide an intriguing sneak peek, comprehensive safety assessments by esteemed agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute Of Highway Safety (IIHS) will provide a more nuanced understanding.

Tesla’s current lineup boasts top safety ratings, with recent accolades like the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ for the 2023 Model Y and Model 3. The Cybertruck has been hailed as “nearly impenetrable.” It will likely undergo rigorous testing to match or surpass the safety standards set by its electric counterparts.
