Yesterday there were news about the Prius recall related to Electronic Parking Brake and today Honda North America has recalled the 10th Generation Civic for Electronic Parking Brake failure. According to official statement by Honda, the vehicle stability control unit “may prevent application of the EPB [Electronic Parking Brake], when it is applied immediately, after turning the vehicle ignition off. Without the EPB properly engaged and the vehicle in Park, the Civic could roll away, causing injury”.  According to Honda no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of the issue as of now.

The issue came into limelight, when number of Civic owners visited the dealership for warranty claims related to Parking Brake illumination in the cluster. The light turns on, but in actual, the parking brake does not get engaged. In some cases, the light turned on for 15 seconds and then turned off. The problem is related to the software for the Vehicle Stability Assist Electronic Control Unit, which is preventing the EPB to be applied once the ignition is turned off. The issue is affecting almost 350,000 locally delivered Civic sedan and Civic 2 door coupes in the United States, which means, since the start of Civic X production, all cars are now in recall. The issue will be resolved by software updates to the ECU. Honda North America will be contacting all Civic owners via  recall notices and will offer immediate rectification free of cost at all Honda Authorized dealerships.

No such report or complaint has yet surfaced from the Asian market. It is recommended that all Civic owners must keep an eye on their cars and make sure they double check the Electronic Parking Brake being engaged after the ignition is tuned off. If they feel or see any abnormality, they should immediately contact the local Honda dealership.

12V electrical system is a joke. All that new fancy electronics is also a joke.

Which is why we prefer simple mechanical systems like cable-operated hand brake.

Agreed. Electronic parking brake is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. It solves absolutely no problems and creates needless complications.

How else would u have the Brake Hold, electronic brake is there for this

there is brake hold present on cars without electronic parking brake, if you read the user manual of honda civic, brake hold is different from parking brake and if driver’s door is opened while it is in brake hold mode, parking brake is automatically applied. also a combination of manual + electronic would be more suitable like electronic power steering if stops working you still have control without power assistance.

No. An electric brake does not take away our earning opportunities. We welcome progress only where it is beneficial. Progress which causes more headache is not welcome. Now when was the last time you heard some car was recalled due to mechanical parking brake issues?

There is a reason why all the commercial trucks use 24V electric system. 12V is a joke and can give way any time. Chaining important functions like brake to 12V systems is a stupidity.

I heard this problem is also being observed in Pakistan. Don’t know if Atlas Honda is doing anything about it.
