With the completion of over 70 pc of the total work, Sukkur-Multan motorway will get operational by August 2019, an official of National Highway Authority (NHA) said.
The 392 km Sukkur-Multan Motorway (M5) project, that started back in August 2016 is under construction at a rapid pace with a number of structures already completed. The inauguration of 33 km Multan-Shujaabad section took place earlier this year but remained close for the traffic due to the incomplete work. An official of National Highway Authority said that over 70% of project work has been completed till date and is expected to be completed by August next year. The completion date of the project as mentioned in the mobile app of NHA is 4th September 2019. According to the official, almost all the bridges are near to completion with the asphalt pavement works underway at a swift pace.
The economy of Pakistan quite heavily depends on the motorways and also considered as a major component of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The government of Pakistan and China signed a framework agreement after which the project work initiated for this section of motorway. The quality standards of motorways are unmatchable in the country that offers a high-speed, six-lane travelling to the passengers with multiple interchanges. A bulk amount of goods are transported from the industries through motorways every day.
The route of Sukkur-Multan motorway begins from Multan, and while passing through Jalalpur Peerwala, Ahmed Pur East, Rahimyar Khan, Sadiqabad, Ubaro, Pano Aqil finally ends at Sukkur. It has a number of interchanges that allow nearby cities an access to the motorway services. The interchanges of Sukkur-Multan motorway link the areas of Multan, Shujaabad, Uch Sharif, Jalalpur Pirwala, Taranda, Bahadarpur, Zahir Peer, Ghotki, Pano Aqil, Guddu, Bahawalpur Road, Sukkur, Chachran Sharif Road, Lodhran Road, Sadiqabad Kashmore Road, Alipur Road, Grand Trunk Road and Sugar Mill Road. It is pertinent to mention here that the project consists of a total number of 12 service areas and ten rest areas to facilitate the commuters during their journey. The 11 interchanges accompanied by ten flyovers and 426 underpasses are the key features of the ongoing project. The Sukkur-Multan motorway also includes 54 bridges in its entire route that also includes a major bridge constructed at River Satluj.
