Punjab Traffic Police have issued a serious warning for car drivers and bike riders. According to a notification by traffic police, the individuals who would drive or travel without a mask, their vehicles would be seized. While talking to PakWheels, Lahore Traffic Police and Punjab Traffic Police officials confirm the news.

“Yes, the news is true; the car of the individuals travelling without a mask would be seized,” the officials said. They further noted that the orders have been issued under new traffic SOPs for COVID-19. All the police stations across the province have received orders from higher authorities. “The car would be handed back after the driver would pay the fine,” the officials said.

Talking to media, CTO Lahore Traffic Police said this policy is implemented for safety of people. He further said that policy will not be implemented, if there is only one person travelling in a car or on a bike. “If there are two or more than two people in a car, they have to wear masks,” CTO said. He added that police have fined over 2,500 people in Lahore for violating COVID-19 SOPs.

How Much is the Fine?

However, very interestingly, the officials don’t know the amount of fine. “We don’t know about the amount; the wardens on duty would know about it,” the officials added. Last year, the penalty was around Rs800, so we hope it would be similar this year.

Reason Behind Step by Punjab Traffic Police:

The government has announced new restrictions after the cases of COVID-19 has started rising again. During this third wave, the country has seen record-high cases and deaths due to coronavirus. As per the government, the new version of the virus is deadlier and spreading quicker than before. Furthermore, the infection rate is highest in Punjab, especially in Lahore.

Is it a Right Decision?

Under the current circumstances, the decision seems right; however, seizing the car while only one person is in it looks a bit strange. Because it would be hard for a single person to spread the virus in a vehicle, but we hope the government must have a proper strategy behind this step.

Stay safe people, wear a mask and drive carefully.
