Prince Harry and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle are being heavily criticized for buying their new Range Rover worth £119,000. The real problem is not about the car’s price tag but what it represents.
The actual criticism is directed towards the fact that the car is not environmentally friendly. According to a UK’s Daily Express report, the car’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are 207g/km. This number is more than double the recommended level in California, which is 95g/km.
As part of California’s environmental regulations, vehicles must achieve 54.5 miles per gallon by the end of next year, but the car falls short of this goal by almost 20 miles per gallon. Based on the report, Harry and Meghan’s security team has been seen in the Range Rover, which means the car was bought explicitly for security personnel.
In 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced via their Archewell site that they had committed to working towards reaching net zero carbon emissions by the end of the decade. This was the first time any royal family member had made such a pledge. The announcement came in conjunction with the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.
They had stated that they would be making more thoughtful choices to reduce their carbon footprint as much as possible over time and invest in carbon removal projects to offset any remaining emissions. Harry and Meghan had also announced that they would be working with partner organizations such as Travalyst and the Ethic, a sustainable investing platform, to focus their investments in support of a low-carbon economy.
