Huawei, Xiaomi, Geely To Launch Electric Vehicles This Year

2021 will be a big year as many giant companies plan to make their debut in the international EV market. Right now, when you hear the words electric vehicle or electric car, the first three names that pop in your head are Tesla, Audi, and Porsche. Because these three are the biggest premier EV brands. Rumor has it that Huawei, Xiaomi, and Geely are building their electric vehicles to compete with the big fish in the EV sea. Here is what we know so far.

Huawei Working on a Smart Electric Car

We are all familiar with Huawei as the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. As per reports, the company will soon be entering the automotive market with a Huawei smart electric car worth 300,000 Yuan (roughly $46K). 

The company has plans to manufacture only the electronic parts for the car and partner with a car manufacturing company to take care of the rest rather than building the car from scratch all by itself. Who will be Huawei’s partner in this smart electric car project? We are yet to find out.

Xiaomi Partnering with GWMC to Build a Smart EV

Another Chinese tech giant is eyeing the EV industry. Reports suggest that Xiaomi will be joining the electric vehicle makers’ club this year with a smart EV. The good news is we know who the partnering company is for Xiaomi’s smart electric car, The Great Wall Motor Company (GWMC) of China

As per reports, the two companies will jointly manufacture smart electric vehicles, but the cars will be sold under the Xiaomi brand name. The project is called Xiaomi Smart and will go into development in the next couple of months. The CEO and Founder of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, will be leading this project himself.

China’s Geely Launching a New EV Brand ‘Zeekr’

Next, we have one more EV brand emerging from China. Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a major automotive group from China and the owner of Polestar and Volvo, is working on launching a new electric vehicle (EV) brand called Zeekr.

Geely has plans to launch the Zeekr EVs by the end of this year. The company will initially sell the cars only in China and then continue to introduce them in international markets. 

More and more electric vehicles are making their way into the international market. The exciting bit about this news is the tech companies like Huawei and Xiaomi are making electric cars. But will they be able to compete with the likes of Tesla, Audi, and Porsche? We’ll see.
