Porsche Recalled 43,000 Taycan EVs Worldwide

The rumour has turned into reality; Porsche has recalled 43,000 Taycan Electric Vehicles (EVs) worldwide over sudden power loss. As per international media reports, the company has taken the step after an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the United States. The affected cars include all models of Taycan, including Cross Turismo, from model years 2020 and 2021.

The authority received nine complaints of power loss during the drive. Six drivers stated that they remained unable to restart the car. As per NHTSA, the loss of charge in a 12-volt battery might shut down the entire electric system of the vehicle.

Porsche Stance and Resolution:

Porsche launched its own investigation and found the problem in 130 cars. Commenting on the issue, the manufacturer stated that Taycan uses a 71.0- or 83.7-kWh battery, and the issue persists in all battery sizes. Porsche has issued a software update to modify the car’s power electronics and engine control unit software to resolve the issue. “The bug has already been addressed in the models rolling off the line,” the company added.

Internationally, the car owners have to take to a nearby workshop/dealership to receive an hour-long software update.

Situation for Pakistani Owners:

In Pakistan, Porsche Taycan is not imported officially, meaning the owners have brought these cars personally. So, it means that they have to send the vehicles back to the country from where it has been imported. There are dozens of Taycans in Pakistan currently, and this could be a grave issue for the owners because sending the car back will cost way too much for them. We hope that Porsche will provide some assistance to these owners inside Pakistan.

This is also a case of importing a new technology without official support. It means that it can cost you very dearly if you import a vehicle without that company’s local official dealership/office.

Possible Impact:

Although it would not impact the sales of Taycan heavily, however, the new buyers will be more hesitant. And it is critical as Porsche is trying to shift its consumers to EVs from its popular petrol engine.  Meanwhile, the same impact will be in Pakistan as people will be hesitant in importing it in the near future.
