Chinese Electric Cars in Pakistan – Shifeng D101 is now up for Grabs!

From the looks of it, the electric cars are the future that every automaker is working towards. Companies like Tesla have seen some massive success in this regard. On the other hand, conventional automakers like GM, Nissan and BMW are spending and investing in their research and development as well as infrastructure to be able to produce reliable and cheap electric vehicles.

Where we see Western automakers spending on new electric technologies, not many would know that Chinese are spending equally if not more in these new sorts of automobiles. And the reason for this the horrendous pollution problem China is facing. The Chinese government not only provides massive subsidies but also help in research and development if you are interested in making/producing electric cars.

It was only a matter of time when someone would bring one in Pakistan too. We already have conventional Chinese cars in Pakistan; from FAW cars to Foton to Zotye and a few more. And now someone has brought Chinese electric cars in Pakistan as well.

shifeng-d101The cars in question are Shifeng D101. In a global aspect, Shifeng is not exactly a giant. But they very active in the production of electric cars in China and spend most of their research and development on electric vehicles. As a group, on the whole, they manufacture other products; from tractors to other farm machinery to LCVs to tires and a lot more. Shifeng makes as many as eight models of small city electric vehicles. The D101 model is their five doors and four-seat hatchback model.

The overall dimensions of Shifeng D101 are 3465×1530×1485 mm (L×W×H). The car weighs 1180 kg and has the wheelbase of 2345 mm. The car has the driving range of maximum 150 kilometers on a single charge (>120 kilometers) and can take up to 9 hours to charge from zero battery (official Shifeng number). D101 has the top speed of 80 km/h. Shifeng D101 comes with disks in the front and drums in the rear.

As far features are concerned, you get things like power steering, central locking, electric rear hatch, heater and air conditioning, etc.

The car is available for PKR750,000 in Lahore. Initially, 22 units have been imported to Pakistan. The company price from China is a little over USD6000. The venture behind this electric cars says that they might bring more units if the response is decent enough. Also, it was disclosed to PakWheels that initially there was a notion that electric cars do not come under customs/duty bracket. But that was not the case with these cars. The importer ended up paying heavy duty because there is no precedence of importing electric cars in Pakistan before.
