In a notification, issued by the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) to All Pakistan Shipping Association (APSA) and Pakistan Ship’s Agent’s Association (PSAA), the authority has directed to not bring vehicles in Pakistan, which do not fulfil the import conditions and policies.
The circular reads as follow;
Therefore, in view of the SRO 52(1)/2019, all the shipping agents are directed to ensure “Do not bring the vehicles which do not fulfil the import Policy conditions issued by the SRO 52(1)/2019. See the notification below:
While talking to PakWheels.com, Mr. Arghan, who owns Jumbo International Clearing Agency, said that the step is being taken to curb the flow of imported vehicles which are coming into the country without abiding by the policy as mentioned in the SRO. Moreover, he further asserted that there is another aspect to this new policy and that is the cars are not being cleared from the port, due to the problem mentioned above, which is creating a deadlock, which might cripple the economic activity in the country.
The ships will not be able to unload their goods at the port, due to the cars occupying the space, he added. There are around 200 cars, as of now, at the port, Arghan mentioned.
So, what is SRO 52(1)/2019?
“All vehicles in new/used condition to be imported under transfer of residence, personal baggage or under gift scheme, the duty and taxes shall be paid out of foreign exchange arranged by Pakistan Nationals themselves or local recipient supported by bank encashment certificates showing the conversion of foreign remittance to local currency, as under,
- The remittance for payment of duties and taxes shall originate from the Pakistani national sending the vehicle from abroad, and
- The remittance shall either be received in the account of the Pakistani national sending the vehicle from abroad or, in case, his account ts nonexistent inoperative, in the account of his Family”. Read the complete SRO below:
