“This Year, Motorcycle Sales Broke All Records” – PM Imran Khan

1 1,297

The fiscal year 2021 ended in June, and we had a look into the car sales for the whole year. Compared to last year, 90% more cars were sold in FY21 than FY20. We didn’t pay much attention to motorcycle sales until our Prime Minister brought the subject up. According to PM Imran Khan, this year, we had the biggest number of motorcycle sales in the country’s history.

Motorcycle Sales is the “Empowerment of the Poor”

PM Khan said in a press conference that the record-breaking motorcycle sales indicate that the country’s low-income class is making progress. Since motorcycles are known as the ride of a common man, “aam admi ki sawari”, the PM says the increasing number of motorcycle sales means the empowerment of “aam admi”.

The PM has also given the credits for the empowerment of Pakistan’s low-income class to the government. He said that the government spent the first two years taking the country out of many economic crises. Now that the economy has gotten to a stable state, the government is investing in the poor. Here, you can listen to the complete story the PM made.

Motorcycle Prices Say Otherwise

The whole point of the PM’s speech is that the government has empowered ordinary people and enabled them to buy motorcycles. Let’s look at a few facts here, shall we?

Firstly, how many motorcycles were sold in the fiscal year 2021 that broke all the records? According to the PAMA report, the number is 1,852,685. The average number of motorcycle sales in a year is around 1,500,000. Can we call 300,000 more motorcycle sales the empowerment of the low-income class?

Secondly, the government has recently given tax reliefs for locally produced cars in the new auto policy. However, no tax reductions were introduced for the motorcycles industry. In fact, the bike prices in Pakistan have only gone higher. How is that empowering the poor?

That’s our analysis of the “record-breaking” bike sales in Pakistan. Do you agree, or does the PM’s story make more sense to you? Share your opinion in the comments.
