Why turning off a turbocharged engine after a drive is not a good idea?

In this age of technology, everything is becoming efficient in terms of performance and occupying areas. Today with much advancement in automobile technology, small-displacement turbocharged engines are becoming more and more popular. The reason these engines are becoming popular is their power. Turbocharged engines deliver more power and torque on lower RPMs as compared to the engine with the same displacement and technology.

These engines are becoming common and we need to know a little bit about its maintenance and care.

The most damaging act which can be done to a turbo engine is to turn it off after a drive. If you own a vehicle with a turbocharged engine, this blog will definitely be very informative in preventing your vehicle’s engine from damage. Let us find out why turning off a turbocharged engine abruptly is not a good idea.

Working of a turbocharged engine

First of all, we need to understand the working of a turbocharged engine before going into the details of not turning it off suddenly. In simple words, turbocharger compresses the air it takes in and feeds the pressurized air into the engine’s intake. This air enters the combustion chamber when the piston makes a downward stroke. More fuel burns when more oxygen enters the engine hence delivering more power. After the combustion has completed, hot waste gas exit combustion chamber through the exhaust. The waste gas exits through the turbocharger and spins the compressor wheel enabling the turbocharger to draw cool air from the opposite side and the process continues.

The turbocharged engines nowadays come with an intercooler. The turbocharged engines without an intercooler can face extreme temperatures. A turbocharged engine keeps spinning even after if you switch off the engine due to inertia. One of the techniques to save a turbocharged engine is to use idling.

Idling

As explained before that turbocharged engines run by exhaust gases. The hot liberated gases and extreme spinning speed make it extremely hot after a long drive. The high temperature causes the engine oil to burn and lose its chemical properties. In this situation, if you turn off the car engine suddenly after a long drive, the exhaust gases remain trapped inside the turbocharger. It can destroy the engine over time and also reduce its lifespan. The driver needs to make sure that the engine receives complete lubrication and does not house any dangerous fumes, the driver needs to idle the car before turning the engine off. Idling will allow the oil and coolant to flow through the center section of the engine. If you do not have enough time to idle your car, then try to drive the car at lower RPMs for a few kilometers before turning off the engine to reduce its temperature and save it from malfunctioning.

Use a turbo-timer but first check … it may be illegal or dangerous in some situations.
