Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has decided to crack down on bike riders who don’t wear a helmet while driving the motorbikes. The traffic police of the capital city said that from this day (11-10-2017) ITP would not only fine riders who don’t wear a helmet but will also fine the bike rider if pillion rider isn’t wearing a helmet as well. According to the Police official Rs. 100 fine will be imposed on those who don’t abide by the law.

The decision was taken after a month-long awareness campaign regarding the dangerous effects of not wearing a helmet was initiated by the authorities which ended on 10-10-2017. In the campaign, about 300 helmets were also distributed among the general public. Traffic police also held an awareness rally where around 500 citizens participated with their motorcycles. The bike rally started from Islamabad Sports Complex and after going through various areas of the capital, ended back at the starting line.Islamabad Traffic Police Holds Helmet Awareness Rally

Despite the good intention of the Traffic Police, the question remains; how the traffic Police will penalize thousands of bike riders who don’t wear helmets.

Moreover, it is observed that some policemen themselves do not follow the rules so how can the police implement the new laws in full letter and spirit. SSP-Traffic Malik Matloob addressed this question while talking to media. He said that he would ensure that all the traffic police personnel wear helmets. Let us wait and see the effectiveness of his statement.

He further asserted that pillion riders are as important as bike riders that is why we are implementing such laws. The ITP has taken a good step in this regard and has urged the district government to bind motorbike showrooms in the capital to give two helmets who buy motorbike from them.
