70% cars bought in Pakistan in 2018 were locally assembled: Survey
Buying a car is a serious business, whether you are purchasing an imported or locally assembled car. In Fiscal Year 2017-18, big three– Honda, Suzuki, and Toyota, sold 216,786 cars in Pakistan which is a good number. However, there is still a huge supply and demand gap in the local auto industry which might decrease as new automakers have entered in the local auto industry and have already started offering their vehicles.
Pakwheels.com conducted Automobile Industry Survey in 2018 to see what are buying trends, what percentage of people bought an imported car and what percentage purchased a brand new zero-meter car.
In the survey, 70% of the correspondents said that they bought a locally assembled car while 28% said they purchased imported vehicle whereas 2% didn’t know their car origin.
Aside from the question of whether they bought a locally manufactured car or an imported one, another question was asked to participants which was how much you spent on buying a car. To which 76% of the participants said that they spent under PKR 2 million on buying a vehicle while others spent over PKR 2 million. The stat is a realistic one as Pakistan has a bulging-middle class population whose purchasing power is limited to a certain amount.

It would be interesting to see in the coming years as which cars will be available in under PKR 2 million brackets as local automakers are raising the rates of their vehicles making it more difficult for people to buy cars. Moreover, inflation is also increasing which is also diminishing the buying power of the countrymen especially the middle-class population which buys a considerable chunk of cars in the country.
Note here that a total of 35,176 responses were recorded from all over the country. This survey covers the public’s spending habits, driving behavior, expectations and routine practices in the automobile sector in Pakistan.
