First-Ever Auto Industry Safety Standards Approved in Pakistan

Pakistan took its first steps toward auto industry safety on Friday as the Cabinet Committee for Disposal of Legislative Cases (CCLC) approved the safety standards for the auto industry.

The only step left to make these safety standards a part of the law is to get them approved by the federal cabinet. These standards will soon be sent to the cabinet for approval and then declared as official safety standards, which every automaker in Pakistan will have to comply with.

The Committee for Disposal of Legislative Cases (CCLC) stated that they had approved eight safety standards that will apply to local manufacturers. These standards include Child Restraint System (PS:5574 and PS:5575), Safety Belts (PS:5578 and PS:5579), Air Bags (PS:5576), Electric PowerTrain for EVs (PS:5550 and PS:5551), and Helmets for Riders (PS:1402).

Devising Auto Industry Safety Standards

These safety standards are pretty similar to the Japanese safety standards and were devised by the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA). Three different ministries had to sign off on these standards to get them approved. These three ministries include the Ministry of Science and Technology, which governs the PSQCA, the Ministry of Industries, which deals with the auto sector, and the Ministry of Climate Change, which is working to curb carbon emissions.

Therefore it was a tough task to devise these safety standards. Nonetheless, it is a big step forward in establishing safety protocols for the Pakistan auto industry. The approval of the first-ever auto industry safety standards in Pakistan is a significant development in the country’s efforts to improve road safety and protect its citizens. Hopefully, these standards will eventually be improved and become similar to international safety standards.
