Lahore: The city’s traffic authorities have rolled out sweeping reforms to plug loopholes in the driving license system and improve transparency.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic, Waqas Nazir, announced that surveillance cameras at all driving test centers will now remain active 24 hours a day. This ensures every test is recorded in full, eliminating the possibility of tampering or favoritism.
Permanent Video Records
Unlike the previous policy, where footage was deleted after 15 days, all test recordings will now be stored permanently at the Safe City Authority’s data center. Officials say this change will make it easier to handle complaints, review tests, and investigate issues.
Ending Backdoor Licensing
DIG Nazir emphasized that the new system aims to end the practice of granting licenses through favoritism or without proper training. Advanced cameras and vehicle sensors will automatically flag mistakes during tests, ensuring that only competent drivers are approved.
Restoring Public Confidence
The reforms come in response to increasing loopholes in the licensing process. Officials say the permanent video repository will provide a reliable mechanism for monitoring, auditing, and corrective measures.
The move is expected to restore public confidence in a system that has often been criticized for lacking transparency.
