Challans Worth Rs1.5 Billion Issued in Lahore Last Year

Lahore City Traffic Police have recently ended the daily challan quota for traffic wardens. Sharing the steps to ensure smooth traffic flow in Lahore, the police announced that it had ended the daily challan quota across the city.

Commenting on the daily quota system, Lahore-based journalist, Ali Ramay, tweeted that the challan quota system has been ended in Punjab. “Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has ordered to end the system in Lahore and rest of the province,” he wrote, adding that now the performance of wardens will not be evaluated on the number of daily challans.

Meanwhile, he also shared the details of the amount collected by the police through challans. Quoting a report, Ramay revealed that Rs. 1.5 billion rupees were collected by the traffic police through traffic challans in Lahore last year. “Meanwhile, in only one month of 2023, Lahore police issued 4, 790,000 challans to citizens, collecting Rs. 20 crores,” he further wrote.

Although the amount sounds unrealistic, a media channel’s fact-finding team has confirmed that this statement is accurate. Quoting Chief Traffic Office (CTO) Lahore Mustansar Feroze, the report stated that traffic police issued 37,416,23 tickets last year, and most of them were issued to citizens for riding bikes without a helmet.

The list shows that challans were also issued for improper number plates, driving licenses, one-way driving, tinted glasses, wrong parking, use of mobile phones, and emitting smog. Meanwhile, the police registered 7,191 FIRs during the previous year for violation of different traffic regulations.

The Lahore traffic police have been quite active in resolving the traffic problems in the city. The force imposed heavy fines (Rs. 2,000) for driving without a license, parking incorrectly, and violating the one-way rule. Furthermore, the police implemented a digital traffic challan system on important roads and launched a drone monitoring system to keep a bird’s eye view of the traffic flow.
