Driving Without Helmet – FIR or Not?
Punjab’s incumbent caretaker government seems to have embarked on providing the maximum possible relief to the motorcyclists in the province. After the interim Chief Minister announced ‘No FIR’ against learners with expired and international driving licenses, here is another update for motorists driving with no helmets.
In a recent update, the Lahore High Court has instructed the traffic police not to register FIRs against drivers without helmets. This decision came during the hearing of petitions related to smog.
Justice Shahid Karim expressed that filing an FIR for not wearing a Bike helmet seemed severe. He recommended increasing fines and advised against police pursuing cases for helmet violations.
A Senior Superintendent of Police (SP) from the traffic police informed the court that more than 26,000 FIRs had been lodged against underage drivers and individuals violating helmet regulations.
A New Deadline for Driving License Fee
Driving license in Punjab is a primary concern for motorists, particularly in the wake of a horrible accident that engulfed six people from the same family. Soon after this scary whammy, Punjab’s caretaker unleashed a cascade of strict crackdowns penalizing underage drivers and individuals without a valid driving license.
In a recent development, the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, has once again made a positive gesture towards the public. Mr. Naqvi has decided to extend the deadline to increase driving license fees.
his marks another instance of the Chief Minister granting an extension, and it follows the announcement by the Punjab government a week earlier, stating that the license fee hike was scheduled for January 1, 2024.
With this new extension, citizens have been given additional time to secure their licenses, avoiding the potential consequence of spending a night or two in a police station if they fail to comply with the deadline.
