Floods Disrupt Train Services in Punjab, Key Routes Suspended
LAHORE: Train services across several sections in Punjab have been severely disrupted after heavy monsoon floods damaged railway tracks, washed away bridges, and overtopped rails, Pakistan Railways confirmed.
Officials said multiple key routes—including Narowal–Sialkot, Chak Jhumra–Shaheenabad, Wazirabad–Sialkot, Jhang–Shaheenabad, and Khanewal–Shorkot—have been suspended until further notice. The suspension has stranded thousands of passengers and halted freight operations in the province.
According to Pakistan Railways, restoration work is underway, with the Narowal–Sialkot section expected to reopen by mid-September. However, officials warned that complete rehabilitation will take longer due to the extensive damage to the infrastructure.
The rail disruption comes as Punjab faces one of the worst flood crises in recent years. Estimates suggest that more than 1.8 million people have been affected, with over 8,400 villages submerged and around 1.05 million acres of farmland inundated.
Beyond rail operations, the flooding has also impacted the power supply. The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) reported that over 73,000 households lost electricity, with more than 13,000 still without power due to storm-related damage.
Railway officials urged commuters to stay updated through official channels before planning travel, while relief agencies continue to focus on rescue, rehabilitation, and repair efforts across the province.
