Islamabad Makes E-Tags Mandatory for All Vehicles Entering the City

Islamabad: A few days ago, Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry announced in a press conference that all vehicles operating in Islamabad will be required to have an E-Tag. This applies to both Islamabad-registered vehicles and vehicles from other provinces. He stated that vehicles without an E-Tag will not be allowed to enter Islamabad.

During another press conference on the “Secure Neighbourhood Survey,” the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad also highlighted the initiative’s importance.

He said that this tagging system is the only way to keep Islamabad safe and secure.

Following these statements, the DC Islamabad later announced on X (formerly Twitter) that beginning 18 November, the Federal Government will start issuing E-Tags to all vehicles operating in or entering Islamabad:

This E-tagging initiative came shortly after a suicide blast in Islamabad, after which Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi directed authorities to strengthen security measures.

He had directed that, after a two-week grace period, no vehicle without an E-Tag should be permitted to enter Islamabad.

However, as of publishing, the government has not yet announced the designated issuance points for E-Tags or their pricing. We’ll report the designated issuance points and pricing as soon as they are announced, so keep following the PakWheels blog.

Quick FAQs to Clear Confusion

Are vehicles with M-Tags also required to get E-Tags?

No. If your vehicle already has an M-Tag, you do not need a separate E-Tag.

Why is an E-Tag needed when number plates already identify a vehicle?

Number plates can be forged, duplicated, or tampered with, but an E-Tag cannot be read or verified if it’s fake.

Do motorcycles also need an E-tag?

Yes, every vehicle entering Islamabad will require an E-tag.

Is an E-Tag required if a vehicle is not Islamabad-registered and is only entering the city once?

Yes. Even if your vehicle is not registered in Islamabad and you are entering the city only once, an E-Tag is still mandatory.
