Every day, we receive a new update narrating the Punjab government’s new plan to add innovation to Lahore’s transport service. For some time now, the provincial government has been unveiling a series of projects aimed at enhancing both the efficiency and visual appeal of the city’s transportation system. This time, the government comes with ‘Underground Metro Train’ project

The Punjab government has initiated the feasibility and design phase for the much-anticipated Blue Line Metro Train, aiming to enhance Lahore’s urban transport network. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan has been directed to accelerate the process to ensure swift progress.

Route & Budget

Stretching 27 kilometers from Valencia Town to Babu Sabu Chowk, the Blue Line will traverse key locations such as Johar Town, Faisal Town, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg, Jail Road, and Ferozepur Road. This extensive route will integrate major commercial and residential hubs, making daily commuting more efficient for thousands of residents.

The project is expected to cater to around 250,000 passengers daily, providing a reliable alternative to congested roads. The government has set an ambitious three-year timeline for completion, employing state-of-the-art construction methods, including tunneling at a rate of six meters per day.

With an estimated cost surpassing Rs. 600 billion, financial backing is a crucial factor. Several international institutions, including those from China, Japan, and France, have expressed interest in funding the initiative. While earlier studies in 2016 explored partial underground routes, a recent assessment in June 2024 confirmed that the entire train line will be built underground, ensuring minimal disruption to Lahore’s existing infrastructure.

Previously, the Punjab government introduced several similar initiatives in Lahore, such as a tram service and an electric taxi service. Many of these projects have already been implemented, including electric buses, a hybrid double-decker bus service, and dedicated lanes for bicycles and motorcycles.
