According to a report by Express News, the rates of paid washrooms on the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M1) just hiked more than 50%!

Previously, the cost of eatables in rest areas of M1 kept increasing, and now, the fee for attending washrooms has also increased. The fee for the paid washrooms has been hiked from Rs. 50 to Rs. 80 per person. This increase of more than 50% is substantial. Many people have protested against it and even complained about it to the authorities.

The travelers have specifically contacted NHA to report this unfair price hike. Other related administrations were also approached for a call to action. We contacted the motorway police for their comment on the matter. However, we haven’t received any so far. We will add the police’s comment once we get one.

History Of Raised Fees

The introduction of luxury restrooms in 2018 was a great addition to the service areas of all motorways in Pakistan. While it allowed a steady revenue for the service area staff, it also provided travelers with the option to use a clean, well-maintained restroom.  the common public washrooms were usually avoided by travelers due to their poor hygienic conditions, but this cleaner alternative was a game changer. Not only were these washrooms bigger and cleaner, but they also came with the latest sanitaryware. It allowed a more comfortable option for travelers at a minimal fee of Rs. 50 per person. These paid washrooms also had changing stations for babies and huge mirrors with both hot and cold water supply.

The fee was considered to be substantial even back then as Rs. 50 for a 5-person car could rack up to Rs. 250 and might not be a suitable option for all. But, the restrooms were a huge hit in the beginning.

The fact that these fees have been hiked more than 50% has raised concern for rampant inflation in motorway service areas.
