Motorway Police To Take Extreme Measures After Salt Range Accident

A recent high-speed bus accident on the motorway claimed the lives of 13 individuals, leaving a community in mourning. In the wake of this salt range accident, the motorway police have put forth a bold proposal to address the dangers of the salt range, a treacherous 10 km-long stretch. Their solution? Convoy escorts for passenger buses, a strategy that aims to reduce road and highway mishaps significantly.

Deputy Inspector General Mohammad Yusuf Malik of the Motorway North Zone has devised a plan that involves issuing “time cards” to buses at designated safe spots, while employing a vigilant system of speed cameras and patrol cars to ensure compliance. This collective approach, he believes, will help safeguard the lives of passengers and minimize accidents, particularly in the accident-prone Kallar Kahar region.

To further enhance road safety, the Islamabad toll plaza serves as a critical checkpoint. Here, the police’s public service vehicle (PSV) information management center meticulously examines each public and goods transport vehicle, scrutinizing vital documents such as vehicle fitness certificates, route permits, and driver’s licenses. Overloading, poor tire safety, lack of first aid equipment, malfunctioning electronic devices, and drivers without valid licenses are taken extremely seriously and are subject to severe penalties.

Blame Of the Salt Range Accident

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the bus driver and owner face legal prosecution for their alleged role in the accident. Disturbingly, survivors have come forward, sharing their concerns about the bus’s mechanical condition, claiming it was unfit to be on the road. These passengers recount that the police officer at the Islamabad toll plaza failed to request the vehicle’s fitness certificate or record footage of the passengers as they crossed the checkpoint.

The motorway spokeswoman vehemently denies these allegations, asserting that “passengers are unaware that their video was being recorded.” The investigation into the collision and the driver’s recklessness remains ongoing, with experts delving deeper into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. In parallel, the local authorities have taken swift action, launching an FIR (First Information Report) based on complaints filed by highway police inspector Mohammad Bilal, the bus driver, the Shalimar company owner, the Rawalpindi and Jhang bus terminal managers, and the motor vehicle examiner.
