The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has announced deploying Intelligent Robotic Systems on motorways M1, M2, M3, and M4 in the next two years. Talking to the media, an NHMP spokesperson said that the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) would be implemented under an agreement with Frontier Works Organization (FWO). “With this new system, commuters would no longer be stopped unnecessarily on the motorway,” the spokesperson said.

He added that Lahore-Sialkot Motorway has already adopted a completely human-less system. “The commuters will not be stopped for challan payment on the road; rather, they will pay the challan fee along with the toll tax while exiting the motorway,” he explained.
The spokesperson further said in developed countries, this system is designed to send challans to violators after they leave the road. “But in Pakistan, there are several issues; for example, multiple family members drive one vehicle, making it hard to identify the actual offender,” he told the media.
Also, he said that in many cases, people drive unregistered cars with open letters, making it hard to enforce this intelligent system and send challans to their home addresses. He believes that the ITS system needs a strong database for efficient enforcement. Despite challenges, this system marks a significant milestone in NHMP’s efforts to modernize the motorway travel experience. “This system will revolutionize issuing challans on motorways and highways in the next few years,” he asserted.
The ITS will help the motorway police implement a modernized traffic strategy and spot speeding vehicles while helping the commuters avoid delays. The new system will help reduce traffic jams at toll plazas where long queues are visible regularly, causing delays and air pollution.
