ISLAMABAD — The federal government has cleared the way for a rapid rail link between the twin cities, aiming to slash travel times and ease daily commutes.
In a high-level meeting on Monday, chaired jointly by Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, officials endorsed the launch of a modern train service connecting Islamabad’s Margalla Station with Rawalpindi’s Saddar Station. Authorities say the new route will cut the journey to just 20 minutes.
According to participants, the Ministry of Railways will make its existing tracks available for the project, while the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will be tasked with managing operations.
A framework agreement is expected to be finalized and signed next week, with directives issued to give the scheme priority status.
Highlighting the significance of the plan, Railways Minister Abbasi described the train service as a step forward in public welfare, promising faster and more convenient travel for residents. Interior Minister Naqvi echoed the sentiment, framing the initiative as part of the government’s broader commitment to making everyday life easier.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry added that the service would not only be affordable and efficient but also play a key role in reducing congestion on the heavily trafficked roads between Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
