Over 30 Vehicles Swept Away in Gilgit-Baltistan Flash Floods

Devastating flash floods triggered by heavy rains and a cloudburst have wreaked havoc in Gilgit-Baltistan, sweeping away over 30 vehicles and causing damage to major roads, including the Karakoram and Babusar highways. 

The sudden deluge, which occurred on Monday afternoon. According to police, flash floods swept away more than 30 vehicles, including passenger coasters, with around 10 to 15 cars reportedly destroyed. The flash floods have severely impacted road infrastructure, with 7-8 kilometers of the Babusar Road completely destroyed and four connecting bridges washed away. 

In response to the crisis, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has been actively working to clear the blocked routes. According to an NHA spokesperson, traffic has been successfully restored at several locations, including near Chilas Bazaar, Zero Point, and Governor Farm. Additionally, the Karakoram Highway has been reopened for one-way traffic at Passu, and restoration work is ongoing near Tata Pani. 

The flooding also led to the complete closure of the Babusar Road due to landslides. The Karakoram Highway was also blocked at Tata Pani and Lal Pahari because of heavy debris. 

Heavy Rains Impact Islamabad

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in Islamabad and Rawalpindi has resulted in flooding in low-lying areas. In a notable incident, a car was swept away in a storm drain in Saidpur, Islamabad. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated an emergency response plan and has urged citizens to report any water accumulation or blocked drains to its helpline, “1334”.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel to the flood-affected regions. Drivers planning trips through Gilgit-Baltistan are strongly advised to postpone their journeys until the monsoon season ends and the risk of flash floods subsides. If you become stranded or stuck, contact local Rescue 1122, police, or the Motorway helpline 130 for assistance. Remain inside your vehicle unless conditions become unsafe, and avoid crossing floodwaters or damaged roads on your own.
