Despite a record slump in sales and back-to-back production shutdowns, Pakistan Suzuki Motors Company (PSMC) has secured a spot on the podium for the tag of the biggest carmaker in the country. Pak Suzuki has turned its fortunes in terms of market share.

As per the reports, PSMC reached a new milestone producing 2.5 million vehicles over more than 40 years in Pakistan. The company’s economy cars, like Mehran, aka ‘The Boss’, before 2019 and the trending ‘Alto’ after that, played a vital role in achieving the landmark. Moreover, Cultus, Wagon R, and Bolan also did the same.

Current Episode

In the last couple of months, Pakistan has witnessed a gruesome in the face of import curbs leading to dwindling sales and production. The company sold fewer than 1,000 units in February 2023. Earlier in January, Pak Suzuki sold only 44 Altos – a horrific digit for the company’s best seller.

PSMC has also announced that it will prolong the production shutdown of its motorcycle factory until April 15. On top of that, the company is also shutting down operations from April 07, 2023, to April 14, 2023.

The company has cited the major reason behind this extensive shutdown to be a shortage of raw materials. The import restrictions continue to wreak havoc on the auto industry as several companies are forced to shut down their operations.

“Due to shortage of inventory level… the management of the company has decided to extend shutdown period of its motorcycle plant till April 15, 2023,” Pak Suzuki informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) of the news in a notice.

It further said, “The automobile plant will also observe shutdown on April 07, 2023, & April 14, 2023, due to shortage of inventory level.”
