PAMA – Car Sales Plunges by 16% (MoM)

Pakistan automotive industry, like any other, is also bearing the brunt of prevailing economic shocks. The alarming dip comes as a result of a perfect storm brewing within the industry, fueled by production cuts, dwindling sales figures, and the lingering repercussions of not-well-thought economic strategies.

In a startling revelation, the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) report has laid bare the grim reality of the automotive industry as car sales plummeted by a staggering 16% month-on-month (MoM). As per the report, automakers sold 5092 vehicles last month comparing 6,034 units in June’23.

Meanwhile, the industry recorded 57% year-on year decrease in car sales, selling 11,925 units in July’22 against 5,092 vehicles in corresponding period of this year.

Coming to the bike sales, the two-wheelers observed a low of 11% (month-on-month) last month, selling 72,421 units in July compared to 81,692 bikes in June’23. Honda sold 62,102 bikes in July 2023 against 75,056 units in June. Whilst Suzuki observed a jump of whopping 164% bikes in July, selling 957 units last month compared to 363 in June.

Similarly, sales of trucks are increased by 54% (MoM) whilst decreased by 29% in case of buses. Moving to Jeep and pickups, sales of pickups are increased by 26% whereas jeeps’ sales witnessed a slump of 30%.

Company-Wise Sales Breakdown

Toyota Pakistan recorded a low of 26% in its sales. The company sold 1,368 units in July against 1,846 units in June. (MoM decrease: 26%)

Highlighting Honda Atlas’ sales, the carmaker jacked up by of 61%, selling 494 units last month compared to 307 units in Jun’23. (MoM growth: 61%)

Meanwhile, Pak Suzuki Motors Company’s sales decreased by of 19% in July, selling 2,444 vehicles against 3,009 cars in June. (MoM decrease: 19%)

Hyundai Nishat sales increased by 2%, selling 569 units last month compared to 558 units in June. (MoM growth: 2%)

It is related to mention that all other car companies, Kia Lucky Motors, Master Changan Motors, Regal Motors, MG Motors, and Al-Haj Proton, are not PAMA members. Their sales numbers are not included in the report.

Car-Wise Sales Breakdown

Pakistan Suzuki Motor Company sold 1,440 units of Alto, 177 units of Suzuki Cultus, 245 units of Suzuki Wagon R, 249 units of Suzuki Swift, 146 units of Suzuki Bolan, and 187 units of Suzuki Ravi.

Toyota Indus sold 1,067 units of Corolla and Yaris and 301 units of Fortuner and Hilux.

Honda Atlas sold 208 unit of City and Civic and 286 units of BR-V and HR-V.

Hyundai Nishat sold 80 units of Elantra, 90 units of Sonata, 71 units of Porter, and 328 units of Tucson.
