Lahore City Traffic Police have proposed turning the famous MM Alam Road into a walking street. In this regard, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr. Assad Malhi and other top officials visited the road yesterday. During the visit, the officials discussed the operational aspects of the project.
Talking to the media, CTO said that we have visited the road to check the feasibility of whether to turn this road into a walking way street and a one-way road. “We have proposed to open it for traffic from Hussain Chowk towards Mini Market while closing it from Mini Market towards Hussain Chowk,” he explained.
Plan to Remodel MM Alam Road
The officer further said we are doing an initial assessment, traffic count, and whether the linked roads could take its load. “After the final assessment, authorities will take a decision, and work will start on this project,” the officer said.
Answering a question about the parking issue, CTO said under the proposed plan, there would be road-side parking spaces on both sides. “All the plazas with parking space will be directed to open the parking lots and utilize it, ” he said, adding that the Doongi Ground Parking has a capacity of 600+ cars, but unfortunately, people only utilize it partially. “After the remodeling, we will encourage people to use that parking space,” shared the CTO.

“As citizens, we also need to change our behavior as it is not a must to park the car in front of the shop where we want to do shopping,” the officer asserted. The CTO also told the media that the actual purpose of this project is to encourage people to walk and turn this road into a pedestrian-friendly road.
It is pertinent to mention that MM Alam Road is currently the shopping hub of Lahore, and people come here for high-end shopping. Remodeling this road will help the citizens and resolve the traffic jam issue especially in rush hours.
