Lahore – In response to worsening air quality across the province, the Punjab government has made it mandatory for all motorcyclists to wear face masks, aiming to reduce health risks linked to smog and air pollution.
Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb stated that polluted air from India’s northern regions, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, and Patiala, is drifting toward Lahore. Simultaneously, southern districts such as Multan, Bahawalpur, and Bahawalnagar are also experiencing elevated smog levels due to cross-border pollution.
To limit dust and airborne pollutants, construction sites have been instructed to cover building materials, while transporters must keep goods fully covered during transit.
“Wearing masks while riding motorcycles is now compulsory,” said Aurangzeb. “We also advise residents to keep car windows shut and ensure homes are properly sealed.”

Additionally, anti-smog guns and water sprinklers have been deployed in Lahore and other major cities as part of the province’s emergency air quality response.

- Always wear a face mask outdoors, especially on motorcycles.
- Keep car windows closed while driving.
- Seal doors and windows at home to block smog infiltration.
- Limit outdoor activity during peak pollution hours.
- Monitor daily air quality updates from official sources.
Authorities expect a brief window of improved air quality between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., though light haze may persist in the afternoons. Citizens are urged to follow all precautionary guidelines and cooperate actively to help lower smog intensity across the region.
