As this winter’s first snowfall hit Murree this week, thousands of tourists from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and even Lahore have started flocking to the hill station. Media reports show that the areas, including Nathiagali, Bhurban, Ayubia, Mall Road, Kashmir Point, and Pindi Point, are crowded with tourists.

And this has led to an access problem, as long lines of vehicles can be seen at Satra Meel Toll Plaza, Murree Road. Much to the delight of the trippers, light snowfall has started in Murree and Galiyat. Meanwhile, to avoid last year’s climatic disaster, the authorities are prepared to meet any challenges and problems.

“Code Red” in Murree

Rescue 1122 secretary Dr. Rizwan Naseer told the media that the “code red” has been implemented in Murree after the latest forecast. “Additional equipment has also been transported to Murree for rescue operations in snowfall,” he said. The official further added that orders have been issued for emergency operational preparations in Murree. Additionally, emergency vehicles, rescue motorbikes, and rescue personnel have been deployed at risky points.

Rescue 1122 has deployed 13 ambulances, eight fire tankers, and 20 rescue motorbikes. Furthermore, snow shovels, oxygen cylinders and other rescue equipment have been provided to the deployed personnel.

Travel Advisory

The government has advised the citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in bad weather, especially during snowfall. The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has directed tourists to wear long and warm dresses to protect themselves from cough, flu, and other diseases. Additionally, travelers are encouraged to use car chains for the snow to ensure better traction and safety on slippery roads. “Motorists should stop their vehicles from time to time and avoid using heaters for more than 10 minutes,” the advisory mentioned.

The PDMA has also ordered all the relevant authorities to remain vigilant to guide the commuters. The authorities are taking all these steps to avoid last year’s incident in which 22 people died from an overnight snowstorm in January 2022.

So, if you are planning to visit Murre, be careful and plan accordingly.
