In surprising news, Toyota Corolla beat Honda Civic in Canada for the first time in the past 24 years! Honda Civic had been reigning the Canadian auto market with the highest sales every year for 24 consecutive years. But this time, in 2022, Toyota Corolla pushed the Civic down and took the first spot for itself!
In 2022, Toyota managed to sell 33,096 Corollas in Canada compared to the 29,772 Civics sold by Honda. These figures are massive even though Toyota’s sales dropped by 17% in 2022, and Honda’s sales fell by 31%. The drop in sales couldn’t stop Toyota from claiming the spot for the best-selling car in Canada for the year 2022.
Vice president of global forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions, Sam Fiorani, gives credit to Toyota’s huge range of variants for the Corolla model for this success. He feels that due to the presence of several different trims, Toyota was able to surpass Honda in sales.
He further added, “A wider range of models, including one with a lower base price than any Civic and an AWD model, makes the range more appealing to Canadian buyers,”
Regarding this historic feat, Toyota Canada’s vice president of sales and marketing, Cyril Dimitris, also had to say something to Auto News:
“I personally think we’ve done a great job at keeping this product refreshed. And that means new powertrains, different powertrains, new features. We’ve added all-wheel drive to the vehicle. It comes in a hybrid. It comes in new body styles. Most recently, we’ve injected some energy into the Corolla brand with GR Corolla. When you do those things, we feel we’re appealing to a broader and broader audience. And we feel there is a Corolla for just about anybody.”
He also mentioned that it was not Toyota’s goal to dethrone Honda, but their primary goal was to improve every vehicle they have for every customer out there.
Honda’s sales drop is massively attributed to the shortage of semiconductors and COVID-19 restrictions.
