Transport Alliance Rejects Fuel Price Hike, Announces Fare Increase

The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance (PGTA) has strongly opposed the federal government’s latest revision of petrol prices, declaring the move “unacceptable” and warning of potential industrial action.

In a statement on Tuesday, PGTA President Malik Shahzad Awan emphasized that transporters are already grappling with soaring operational costs and cannot bear any further financial strain. “The repeated increase in petrol and diesel prices is shaking the very foundation of the transport sector, which is critical to the country’s supply chain,” Awan said.

As an immediate measure, the alliance has announced a 3 percent rise in transportation fares. Awan further warned that if the government fails to withdraw or review the recent hike, transport unions will convene to decide on stronger measures in the coming days.

The protest comes in the wake of a notification from the Ministry of Finance revising fuel prices for the next 15 days. According to the announcement, the cost of petrol has increased by Rs. 4.07 per litre to Rs. 268.68, while high-speed diesel has risen by Rs. 4.04, reaching Rs. 276.81 per litre.

The revised rates took effect immediately after the ministry’s announcement, sparking frustration among transporters who were already struggling to cope with mounting expenses.
