The President of Pakistan has backed the recommendations of the Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO), shedding light on an underhand vehicle auction conducted by the Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation Customs.
Underhand Vehicle Auction
The saga began with an open car auction held in Quetta by the Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation (Customs) on July 21, 2022. However, the proceedings of Lot No.55/2022, a 2007 model 1800 cc vehicle, raised eyebrows due to rejected bids and questionable practices.
Presidential Ruling
The President has directed the Director General of Intelligence and Investigation Customs FBR Islamabad to investigate the underhand auction thoroughly. Furthermore, disciplinary proceedings under E&D Rules, 2020 are to be initiated against officers and staff responsible for this underhand vehicle auction.
Arshad Khan, the highest bidder in the second open auction, had followed due process, paying the full amount, including taxes, for the vehicle. Despite fulfilling all requirements, he awaited the delivery of the purchased vehicle.
In his recommendations, the Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) highlighted that the auction process was “fraught with deceit, deception, and gross misuse of authority.” The officers and staff involved were found to have openly breached relevant rules and regulations.
The President emphasized that the delivery of the purchased item is the rightful expectation of the highest bidder. He underscored the need for serious accountability, especially when corruption and miscarriage of law are evident.
The President’s endorsement of the FTO’s recommendations signifies a commitment to zero tolerance against corruption by government functionaries. The call for a thorough investigation and disciplinary proceedings echoes the government’s stance on transparency and accountability.
In a system where fairness and adherence to rules are paramount, this intervention by the President reinforces the principle that no malpractice or corruption will be tolerated. What are your thoughts on this? Share with us in the comments below!
