Is Pak Suzuki Launching Ethanol Cars in Pakistan?
Lately, the auto scene in Pakistan has been buzzing with talk of Pak Suzuki rolling out ethanol-powered cars. Everywhere you look, headlines are hinting that Pakistan Suzuki Motors Company (PSMC) is jumping into the green energy game with ethanol vehicles. Sounds exciting, right? But let’s unpack what’s really going on.
The Meeting That Sparked the Rumors
The spark behind all the speculation? A recent high-level meeting between Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production, and Hiroshi Kawamura, CEO of Pak Suzuki.
They discussed Pakistan’s push for biogas and electric vehicle projects—part of a broader vision to modernize the automotive sector and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The idea is to make local vehicles more sustainable, while encouraging the use of domestically produced auto parts.
One big highlight from the meeting was Suzuki’s plan to set up a biogas plant in Manga Mandi, Lahore. This move was applauded by the government as a step in the right direction for renewable energy efforts. Given the timing and the green energy theme, it’s no surprise that rumors about ethanol cars started swirling.
What’s the Reality?
But here’s what’s actually happening—Pak Suzuki has confirmed that there are no immediate plans to introduce ethanol-powered vehicles in Pakistan. However, the company is moving forward with setting up a biogas unit, which could eventually power its assembly plant using green energy. So, while the media jumped the gun with the ethanol car buzz, Suzuki has essentially hit the brakes on that idea for now.
That said, this doesn’t mean Suzuki is stepping away from sustainability. The biogas project is still a significant initiative, and it shows Suzuki’s growing interest in cleaner energy solutions. Plus, with ongoing collaboration between Pakistan and Japan in the green energy sector, who knows what the future holds?
For now, though, ethanol cars remain a “maybe someday” and not a “coming soon.” But hey, the wheels of change are definitely turning.
