Punjab to Launch 1,100-Vehicle E-Taxi Scheme in November 2025

29

Lahore — The Punjab government is launching its E-Taxi Scheme 2025, aiming to introduce 1,100 electric taxis into the province’s transport system by the end of November. The scheme prioritizes sustainability and gender inclusivity, offering interest-free financing to both fleet owners and individual drivers to facilitate access to eco-friendly transport options.

What you should know about the Punjab E-Taxi scheme?

  • Interest-Free Financing:
A five-year, interest-free loan to ease the financial burden on applicants purchasing electric taxis.

  • Diverse Beneficiaries:
700 vehicles for fleet owners, 400 cars for individual operators, including 100 for women to enhance female participation in the sector.

  • Affordable Terms:
Vehicles are capped at PKR 6.5 million, with a 30% equity requirement. The government covers 50% of equity for men and 60% for women, making it more accessible.

  • Advanced Features and Support:
The taxis come with tracking systems, panic buttons, and warranties for the battery and motor, up to 300,000 km or 6 years. A PKR 3.5 billion subsidy will also cover registration and token taxes.

Balloting Process

With 28,000 applications, successful applicants will be selected through an electronic balloting process, scheduled for the last week of November 2025. Selected individuals will need to make a down payment before receiving their vehicles, expected within three to four months.

Strategic Rationale

The E-Taxi Scheme is part of Punjab’s broader efforts to reduce urban air pollution, cut carbon emissions, and promote sustainable transport. The shift to electric vehicles (EVs) aligns with global trends towards greener cities.

Infrastructure and Implementation

  • Charging Stations: A network of EV charging stations will be set up across the province to support the new fleet.

  • Online Portal: An online portal will streamline applications and provide transparency throughout the process.

Challenges and Considerations

  • High Demand, Limited Supply: With 28,000 applicants for just 1,100 vehicles, the balloting will be highly competitive.

  • Infrastructure Readiness: Success depends on the timely installation of charging stations and maintenance facilities for EVs.

  • Long-Term Sustainability: Ensuring battery life and managing maintenance costs will be essential for the scheme’s ongoing success.

  • Fair Allocation: The government must ensure transparent distribution, particularly for gender-specific quotas.

Moving Towards a Greener Punjab

The E-Taxi Scheme could significantly impact urban transport in Punjab, offering a model for other regions to adopt more sustainable, inclusive urban mobility solutions. Its success will hinge on timely infrastructure rollout, balancing demand with supply, and ensuring long-term sustainability.
