With another month comes another sales analysis of Pakistani auto companies. This time, we have more bad news than good news. The Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) has posted the car sales report for May 2021. As per the PAMA report, car companies lost their sales for the second month in a row. All companies recorded depressing numbers in April and again in May.

The good news is sales are much, much better than last year when the country was under strict lockdown. Only a handful of cars were sold in May 2020. Compared to those numbers, sales in May 2021 were way healthier. Here’s the month-on-month (MoM) comparison of car sales in May 2021.

Month-on-Month Car Sales in May 2021

As per the PAMA report, the Pakistani auto industry sold a total of 12,934 car units in May 2021. Compared to the figure for April 2021, month-on-month car sales dropped by 10%.

Pak Suzuki Motors suffered the least with only a 3% decline in sales to 8,307 units in May 2021 against 8,606 units in April 2021.

Passenger Car Sales

In the passenger cars segment, all Toyota and Honda cars lost their sales, while sales went up for most Suzuki cars. Toyota sold 2,099 units of Yaris and 1,514 units of Corolla in May 2021. The numbers are 19% and 12% lower than in April. Honda sold 1,581 units of City and Civic in May, 23% down from 2,053 units sold in April.

Hyundai also lost sales of its passenger car, Elantra, by 8% from 280 units sold in April versus 259 units sold in May.

SUVs and Jeeps

In an interesting turn of events, Honda BR-V’s sales almost doubled from 234 in April to 420 in May. In the meantime, MoM sales of Hyundai Tucson got half from 503 to only 255. Toyota Fortuner also lost its sales from 364 in April to 318 in May.
