Bikes involved in 71% of Accidents in Punjab

An official report from the Punjab government has revealed that bikes were involved in as many as 71% of the road accidents in the province. As per data, four people have died, and 1,282 were injured in 1,196 road accidents in the last 24 hours. 

The data further revealed that 1,041 motorbikes, 158 cars, 24 vans, 22 trucks, 96 rickshaws, and 106 other types of vehicles were involved in these accidents. Furthermore, 796 were seriously injured and shifted to nearby hospitals. Meanwhile, the rescue services treated 557 citizens on the spot with minor injuries. 

As per the numbers, 1,033 males and 254 females were victims of these road mishaps. Moreover, 240 were under 18 years of age, 658 were aged between 18 and 40, and 399 were over 40 years of age. 

 The report also shared that 599 adults, 30 underage drivers, 175 pedestrians, and 513 passengers were the victims of these accidents. Out of the total, 334 accidents were reported in Lahore, affecting 325 citizens, followed by Multan, where 84 accidents happened with 104 victims, and finally, 82 were reported in Faisalabad, involving 74 victims. 

Fines by Lahore Police 

Lahore City Traffic Police have recently taken a couple of major steps to tackle such accidents and other traffic violations. Firstly, the fine for wrong parking has been increased to Rs. 2,000 from Rs. 200. Under the order of the Lahore High Court, the police have launched an operation against the wrong parking, and illegal parking stands in the city. 

Secondly, the police have launched a project to monitor traffic through drones. Initially, the pilot project has been launched at Mall Road, Jail Road, and Ferozepur Road. After the success of these roads, the police will expand it to other major roads of the city. 

Furthermore, the police have issued heavy fines to the bikers for not wearing helmets. Under the latest operation, the police wardens are imposing challans at every major traffic signal in Lahore so that bike riders can buy bike helmets for their own safety.
