BYD Announces Largest Recall of 115,000 Cars Over Design and Battery Issues
BEIJING — Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has announced a massive recall of over 115,000 cars, marking the company’s largest recall to date. The affected vehicles include Tang Series SUVs and Yuan Pro electric cars, all produced between 2015 and 2022.
According to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the recall stems from design defects and battery-related safety risks identified during quality inspections.
Tang Series SUVs
A total of 44,535 units of the Tang Series, manufactured between March 2015 and July 2017, are being recalled. These vehicles reportedly suffer from design flaws in the drive motor controller, which may overheat and potentially cause a complete power loss while driving.
Yuan Pro Electric Vehicles
Meanwhile, 71,248 units of the Yuan Pro, built between February 2021 and August 2022, are affected by battery installation errors. A manufacturing fault in the sealing process could allow water to enter the battery, posing performance and safety risks, especially in rainy or humid conditions.
Previous Recalls
This isn’t BYD’s first recall in recent years. In January 2025, the company recalled 6,843 Fengcheng Bao 5 plug-in hybrid SUVs due to fire risks. In September 2024, nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs were recalled for faulty steering control units that posed similar hazards.
Industry Impact
The recall highlights growing safety scrutiny within China’s rapidly expanding EV market. Despite this setback, BYD remains one of the world’s top-selling EV manufacturers, and the company emphasized that customer safety and product reliability remain top priorities as it continues to strengthen its global brand reputation.
